Audio description is a technology that enables theater patrons who are blind or have low vision to enjoy live performances by providing spoken narration of a performance’s key visual elements, such as the action, sets, props, facial expressions, costumes and scene changes. Audio description fills in information about the visual content of a performance where there are no corresponding audio elements. It involves a separate script that is delivered live by a voicer via an infra-red or FM transmission to wireless headsets.
ZTP is excited to once again partner with VSA for The Wizard of Oz! VSA has been providing live audio description services in Austin since 1997.
VSA’s mission is to create a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.
More about ASL Interpretative Performance
Sharon Ploeger (ASL Interpreter CI/CT BEI-Legal) first interpreted the Zilker Summer Musical in 2008 – and has done so ever since. However, there have been ASL interpreters on The Hillside at least as early as 2005. Sharon has skillfully brought her talent to work with different partners to make the Zilker Summer Musical accessible with ASL interpretation. ZTP sends out a BIG thanks to Sharon for her coordination and enthusiasm – see her in action in the video below!
ZTP appreciates the support from the City of Austin ADA office for sponsoring the ASL interpretation.
Why it matters…
ADA seating is available at EVERY Zilker Summer Musical show. Please check in at the info table so we can get you set up comfortably.
NOTE: ZTP staff makes every effort to seat all patrons who need ADA seating. However, we do encourage you to arrive on The Hillside by 7:30 pm to help staff facilitate ADA seating for all. Thank you!
